Longest Running Club Celebrates Fifty Years in Scotland

Contributed By: Bob & Sandy Barber

It was 1956 when Bernice Jordan, BCM Field Representative and author of Footsteps of Faith children’s curriculum, visited the home of Lucy Bacon in the Clarkston suburb of Glasgow, Scotland. Inspired by that visit, Lucy Bacon began a Bible Club in her home. The Bible Club continued as a church group was organized. Children grew up and became leaders. Other children took their place. In time the growing church built a stone church building, and the Bible Club moved into the church.

The Clarkston Bible Club became the longest continually running BCM Bible Club in the world. For 21 years Mrs. Bacon continued as its leader. Another leader, Rosalind Imrie, has been involved in one capacity or another for 27 years now. Through the years Bible Club camps, rallies, “Summer Fun,” various outings, and outreaches complemented the weekly evening Bible Club programme. Many of the Bible Club children grew up to go into ministry themselves in the Clarkston Bible Club, in their local churches as pastors and other full-time ministry, as well as overseas missionaries to places like Cambodia and the Middle East.

On September 9th, 2006, a really special celebration was held in Glasgow to celebrate the 50th Birthday of the Clarkston Bible Club. Some 150 present and former clubbers joined with other interested friends for the happy occasion, including two who were at that very first Bible Club meeting. Joyful memories were shared, greetings from more than 50 places around the world received, a current Bible Club meeting observed. Old-timers were thrilled to see that those same elements of Bible Club so memorable to them are still an integral part of Clarkston Bible Club today: A ‘Footsteps of Faith’ lesson. Bible memory verses. Bible sword drill. Lesson-related quiz. A strong missionary emphasis.

Thank God for the incredible number of children and young people who have been touched by the faithful teaching of His life-changing Word over the last fifty years at Clarkston Bible Club. Trust God with us to continue for many years to come the good work that He has begun.
