The Netherlands

Overview

BCM ministry in the Netherlands began in November 1949, when Anne Punt and Annie Verboom started a Bible Club with five children in post-World War II Amsterdam. As the club outgrew its quarters, the Bible Club moved to a houseboat on one of Amsterdam’s canal. Bible Clubs grew to release time classes, then youth groups and camps.

  • 1983: a camp and retreat property was purchased in Putten, about two hours from Amsterdam. Now BCM Netherland’s headquarters, De Herikon (The Lord is King), runs eight weeks of camps each summer as well as retreats for children, youth, families, all the way through senior citizens.
  • 1989: Anne Punt and Annie Verboom retired. Kees and Nellie Brussel, first generation Bible clubbers under the “Annies”, accepted leadership of De Herikon.
  • 2002: Mark Brussels, Kees and Nellie’s son, took over leadership of the camp.

The BCM teacher training course, In Step with the Master Teacher, has been translated into Dutch and is being used to equip churches to make disciples of children in their communities.  A Dutch version of Footsteps of Faith is being used, and the Mailbox Club is available online.
